Every Needle has a needle style, needle size, eye size and a point type.
As an example the standard embroidery needle for all Multi-Needle Embroidery Machines is the DBXK5 75/11

DBXK5 is the Needle Style.

The 75/11 would be the correct needle for most applications using
a 40 weight thread.
75
is the Metric needle size (Needle Diameter = 0.75mm)
& 11 is the American Standard size designation.

There is an 80/12 needle with a Thicker Shank
(Needle Diameter, .80mm) & Larger Eye for doing embroidery on
Caps and denser material where needle breakage occurs;
(6 Panel Caps, Insulated Jackets and Bags with large seams,
for example)

There is also a 65/9 needle for doing were small lettering and for use when using the thinner, 60 weight thread.

WE CARRY THREE STANDARD NEEDLE POINT TYPES:
Gross-Beckert Label Codes
Sharp Point
 - (Labeled RG
)
for use on Woven (stable) Fabrics, including; Caps, Light Leather, Broadcloth, Poplin, Denim, Bags & Insulated Items.

Light-Ball Point - (Labeled FFG/SES)
for use on Knit (unstable, stretchy) Fabrics, Including;  Polo Shirts, T- Shirts,  Fleece and some Micro-Fiber Fabrics.

Wedge Point
- (Labeled SS) specialty needle point (Triangular Tip) for Embroidering on Leather and Vinyl projects. The Wedge Point "slices through" these types of material, eliminating the chance of "cookie cuttering" out the design on the item.

The Standard Needles have a highly polished chrome finish that is good for most situations, but there are specialty coatings for use on certain applications.
The Titanium Nitride Coating gives a longer life and dissipates heat up the shank  better than the standard chrome finish.

The Teflon Coated "Cool Sew" helps to keeps needles free of build-up of sticky backing adhesive and spray adhesives.
Teflon needles have a different label code than the
Groz-Beckert
Sharp Point - (Labeled 75/11 LP) & Light-Ball Point - (Labeled 75/11 SUKLP)

How the right needle can eliminate damage to the material and give better results

Material damage

A needle that is too sharp can create loop damage or can
cut the fibers of the material. Using a needle that is too
large can push out the loop under tension and break the fibers.

Always use a light-ball point needle on items that have a
loose weave. A light-ball point pushes between the fibers
where a sharp may break through the fibers creating a
fuzzy spot at best or a hole at worst.
USE  A LIGHT BALL POINT NEEDLE ON KNITS!

Irregular embroidery appearance on fabric

An irregular design can be caused by needle deflection.
This is a result of using a needle that is too thin or use
of a light-ball point on a woven or dense fabric.

A sharp needle helps to eliminate needle deflection
and gives more uniform results.

Irregular embroidery appearance on leather

This is an example of a light-ball point being used on a
light leather application. The needle deflected and the
 embroidery bunched together.

The use of a sharp needle gives uniform results.
On thick leather items a Wedge Point can used. It is
always a good idea to reduce the stitch density on leather
to prevent the embroidery from cutting out the leather.
